Is Cali, Colombia Safe for American Travelers?

August 2, 2026·Colombia Dental Connect

Like any major city, Cali has areas that are well-suited to tourists and areas that are not — the practical safety question isn't "is Colombia safe" in the abstract, but "am I staying and traveling through the right parts of the city."

The neighborhoods where dental tourism clinics and patient accommodations are typically concentrated (Granada, El Peñón, Ciudad Jardín) see regular, incident-free tourist traffic and are comparable in practical safety to visiting any major Latin American city center with normal precautions: using rideshare apps rather than hailing taxis on the street, avoiding displaying expensive jewelry or electronics unnecessarily, and being aware of your surroundings at night as you would in any unfamiliar city.

Most patients who stick to clinic-recommended areas, use standard travel-safety habits, and avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods at night report the same experience as visiting any well-touristed Latin American city — unremarkable and safe.

Bottom line: Cali is safe for the areas where dental tourism actually takes place, provided you follow the same common-sense precautions you'd use in any unfamiliar major city.
