US-Trained vs. Colombian-Trained Dentists: What's the Difference?

August 2, 2026·Colombia Dental Connect

Dental education in Colombia follows a similar structure to the US — a rigorous multi-year university program, national licensing exams, and increasingly, international certifications and continuing education from the same implant and materials manufacturers used in the US and Europe.

Many dentists who serve international patients in Cali have pursued additional training abroad — fellowships or certification courses in the US, Europe, or through global implant manufacturer training programs — specifically because they cater to patients who expect US-equivalent standards.

The meaningful difference isn't nationality of training but specialization and case volume. A general dentist handling occasional implants is not equivalent to a prosthodontist or oral surgeon who places hundreds of implants per year — and this distinction matters just as much in the US as it does in Colombia.

When evaluating a Colombian clinic, ask about the treating dentist's specific specialty, how many years they've focused on your specific procedure, and whether they have specialty board certification recognized within Colombia's own system.

Bottom line: don't judge quality by "where they trained" alone — ask about specialization and procedure volume, the same way you would when choosing a specialist in the US.
